An Introduction to SAP and Part L1 of the Building Regulations

An Introduction to SAP and Part L1 of the Building Regulations

SAP is the methodology used to assess the energy efficiency of a dwelling.  Using the features In the NHER Plan Assessor software this 1 day course introduces you to full SAP and how it is used to assess the energy efficiency of new and existing buildings.

Suitable for

All members as well as Architects and architectural technologists, Building control officers, Property Developers and their advisers, Renewable technology specifiers/system designers, manufacturers and installers, Retrofit improvement specialists

SAP is the methodology used for assessing new build domestic properties, however, it can also be a very useful tool for assessing improvement measures to existing buildings. Unlike RDSAP, it is possible to model u-value improvements with full SAP, giving a more accurate assessment of the improvements. You can also use full SAP to model accurately the impact of renewable installations for a property.

This one day course goes through the features of Plan Assessor software program, uses exercises  and worked examples to look at the fundamentals of a full SAP assessment. Topics covered will include:

  • Introduction to energy ratings (differences between RDSAP and Full SAP)

  • Energy units and definitions

  • Identifying constructions

  • Building fabric, u-values, thermal bridges

  • U-value calculations

  • Air tightness and ventilation

Understanding the RDSAP conventions

Understanding the RDSAP conventions

This course introduces the fundamentals, conventions and inspection techniques used during an RDSAP 2009 assessment. Participants get the opportunity to try out their new knowledge of RDSAP with two house visits and use the software to see how the data affects the RDSAP rating.

Suitable for

Housing Association and council maintenance and asset management staff

Housing Association and council surveying & stock condition staff

Managers of Domestic Energy Assessors

Environmental health officer/private sector housing enforcement officers

Energy Efficiency advisors

Fuel Poverty advisors

Anyone wishing to understand energy ratings who may wish to move onto DEA training

Energy data and SAP ratings have been used for around 20 years to help inform housing association and council staff on the energy efficiency of the housing stock. They’ve also been used as the basis for action against fuel poverty or against landlords who own properties with an excess cold hazard (seen to be a SAP rating lower than 35).

This course gives participants the opportunity to understand RDSAP, understand the RDSAP fundamentals, conventions and inspection techniques. Participants get to use RDSAP software and produce a SAP rating. This knowledge can then be used to produce RDSAP ratings for properties that do not require EPCs.

The course covers:

  • Background to Energy Performance Certificates and Government legislation in the rental sector
  • Methods of data collection and the latest views on how EPCs are going to be produced in this sector
  • Theory of energy ratings, U-values, ventilation, data collection forms and RDSAP
  • Assessment conventions: built form, age, drawing a sketch plan, habitable rooms and property dimensions
  • Heat loss perimeter, extensions, conservatories, room in the roof, solar panels, alternative walls and how to deal with flats
  • Exercises on completing RDSAP forms
  • Heating and hot water
  • Tour of a house – completing the RDSAP forms and using the software

This is a 3 day course offered alongside the DEA course. Participants can then go on to complete the DEA diploma if they wish.

This course will be running in Milton Keynes on the following dates:

Changes to Part L1A and SAP

Changes to Part L1A and SAP

A package of online CPD and a competency test to ensure that OCDEAs and others are prepared for the changes to Part L1A of the Building Regulations and SAP.

Suitable for

Qualified On Construction Domestic Energy Assessors and others interested in the forthcoming changes.

Both Part L and SAP changing at the same time means big changes to calculations and procedures. It is important that all qualified On Construction DEAs reach the required competence; otherwise, there could be errors in EPCs and building regulation submissions.

We have been running introductory workshops on the changes in Part L 2010 for some months, for which delegate feedback has been outstandingly positive.  It is very clear from these interactions with delegates that there is a need for more detailed guidance on many aspects of the changes. So, whilst this package of CPD was written with OCDEAs in mind, we are confident that it will be of interest and use to a wide range of individuals looking to learn more about the changes.

About the CPD package

We are releasing a package of at least four online CPD modules and a competency test. These modules cover everything an OCDEA needs to know to prepare themselves for the new regulations. The CPD modules are all high-quality learning, and can be taken from the comfort of your office or home. They will provide OCDEAs the opportunity to complete the minimum CLG requirement of 10 hours CPD per year.

The online training modules contain a mixture of presentations, exercises and quizzes. Topics covered include thermal bridging, thermal mass, cooling, cavity party walls, air permeability, ADL1A, ADL1B, and a number of new conventions for data entry. The majority of the material is additional to that covered in the recent (free to members) SAP 2009, Part L 2010 and FEES seminars and aims to address many questions raised by our members and others.

The Competence test is compulsory for OCDEAs but optional for non-members. It is, however, a useful tool to help establish that the key elements of the learning have been acquired.

There are four modules:

Thermal bridging and y value calculation in SAP 2009

  • Recognising and measuring the individual junctions listed in SAP Table K1, including the difference between the two lintel options.

A package of online CPD and a competency test to ensure that HBF members understand the changes to Part L1A of the Building Regulations and SAP.

Suitable for

Members of the Home Builders Federation,

Both Part L and SAP changing at the same time means big changes to calculations and procedures. It is important that all qualified On Construction DEAs reach the required competence; otherwise, there could be errors in EPCs and building regulation submissions.

We have been running introductory workshops on the changes in Part L 2010 for some months, for which delegate feedback has been outstandingly positive.  It is very clear from these interactions with delegates that there is a need for more detailed guidance on many aspects of the changes. So, whilst this package of CPD was written with OCDEAs in mind, we are confident that it will be of interest and use to a wide range of individuals looking to learn more avout the changes.

The online training modules contain a mixture of presentations, exercises and quizzes. Topics covered include thermal bridging, thermal mass, cooling, cavity party walls, air permeability, ADL1A, ADL1B, and a number of new conventions for data entry. The modules will be released during August and September 2010 starting with a substantial module on thermal bridging and calculating y values. The majority of the material is additional to that covered in the recent (free to members) SAP 2009, Part L 2010 and FEES seminars and aims to address many questions raised by our members and others.

The Competence test is compulsory for OCDEAs but optional for non-members. It is however a useful tool to help establish that the key elements of the learning have been acquired.
